Know your anchor.....

For those who like to know more about the news anchor they watch, you may want to read this Globe article about Fox 25's Mark Ockerbloom.

Mark got the "big chair" next to Maria Stephanos when David Wade left to move to Channel 4.

From everyone I've spoken to seems Mark is a nice guy!

Right at Home

"After years sharpening his skills in other markets, native son Mark Ockerbloom is bringing a local accent to Fox 25 News"

Laurenti from WBOS to WUMB.....

John Laurenti is one of the jocks cut loose when WBOS decided to decimate it's history and any goodwill it had with listeners to become who-knows-what....

Looks like John landed himself across the street at WUMB, a place that respects his talent.

Good luck John!

With Laurenti, WUMB aims to make its folk more accessible

It's not everyday that a 30 year veteran personality signs off in Boston.

Thought many may have missed her on-air farewell.....

Joyce Kulhawick says Farewell to Boston Viewers

"WBZ's Joyce Kulhawik says good-bye to WBZ viewers after working as an entertainment reporter for the station for the last 30 years."

Double Duty for PD's...?

While there have always been people doing "double-duty" at most smaller stations, in the larger markets it was always thought that each station needed individual loving care and attention. (How could someone be loyal to two lovers?)

When group consolidation started in Boston, you first started seeing the consolidation in jobs. Traffic reporters, receptionists, engineers, etc. But each station needed the care of one Program Director.

I have to give credit to Greater Media in Boston, where they have maintained 1 PD per station.

With the departure of Dave Wellington from the PD post at WBCN, CBS is giving those duties to the current PD of sister station WZLX Mike Thomas.

The Globe's Clea Simon had this article.

He Welcomes Double Duty

This view holds across the industry. "Double-teaming or triple- teaming the PD is becoming almost the norm," says Tom Taylor, executive news editor of the industry website Radio-Info.

"The Norm" doesn't mean it's good for radio.....

Haiche-Dee Raydeeo

USA Today recently had a few articles about the status of HD Radio.

Volvo will start shipping cars with HD radio as standard equipment in 2008.

While most of the new HD channels are basically jukebox's, there are some formats that are not available on traditional radio. I heard people bemoan the fact that Smooth Jazz is not available on tradional radio, nor folk, nor 70's, nor 50's-60's oldies.

HD radio is a way of providing some of these extra formats to the Boston area. If you are a fan of those formats, a one-time investment($100-$200) can get you those formats for free, without commercials.

You can listen to some of the streams at the links on the (lower) left hand column on this blog.

Live from Boston...BusRadio!

Did you know that a company called BusRadio is right here in Needham? ...and that they provide radio! School buses that is! (They have a website for parents and schools.)

The Herald had this article recently:

BusRadio gains industry ratings, criticism for pushing ads on kids

I don't know how I feel about this. I like to think that childhood should be a "Ad Free Zone"...but from what I understand...there are radios on most school buses now.

In any event, after reading the article, I couldn't get this childhood song out of my head:

"The wheels on the bus go round and round...."

Change at WBCN...?

Dave Wellington leaves WBCN.....are more changes coming down the road?

With departure of program director, change is in the air at WBCN

Looks like Dave is headed to Washington...

Wellington Named PD Of DC101 & Channel 104.3

"WBCN/Boston programmer Dave Wellington has been named Program Director for Clear Channel Modern Rockers WWDC (DC101)/Washington, D.C. and the newly-launched WCHH "Channel 104.3"/Baltimore. He replaces Cruze, who exited the post this past spring."
