New PD at Mix.....!

-

Mix-ing up the local radio scene

"Boston radio veteran Jerry McKenna has left his job as program director of ''Mike" FM and will take over programming duties at Mix 98.5 FM. McKenna is credited with much of the success of ''Star" 93.7 FM before it switched to the so-called ''Mike" format."

A few aloud thoughts.

-Was Star considered a "sucess"? Such a sucess that they flipped the station to an unproven format?

-Was Jerry McKenna ever a PD before Star 93-7? I hard that he worked a a promo rep in the recording industry...and the article says he previously worked at Kiss 108. However, he was never the PD there at Kiss....and he was never a featured on-air personality.

Seems like the jump of the year.

Mike Mullaney, music director at Mix 98-5, has been running the PD-less station since it's last PD left to go to XM(?). Did he want this PD job? Is McKenna better qualified for this job than Mullaney?

Meanwhile.....

WMKK (93.7 Mike-FM)/Boston welcomes Steve Jones to its PD post.

I had wondered how long McKEnna would be at Star, as many see him as a "dance" music kinda guy. Did he leave on his own? Did he get bumped for a PD better suited to "Mike-FM"?

Does anyone know about Steve Jones?

"Jones takes on PD duties for eclectic Adult Hits WMKK (93.7 Mike FM)/Boston after serving as VP/Programming for Canadian broadcaster Newcap Radio. In his former role, Jones was responsible for the programming of 65 radio stations. Jones starts his new duties July 15."

Here's a quick bio and some of his thoughts.

Rumblings.....

-

In and around the market....

Ralphie Marino, former Star 93.7 morning man, has been doing some fill-in work in New York. Both at WBLI on Long Island, and WNEW - Mix 102.7 in the city.

Nassau Broadcasting, which has a cluster up in New Hampshire, has been shuffling around some executives. More, here...

Entercom Boston WAAF PD Keith Hastings
tendered his resignation. HAstings, previously from Milwaukee, has been at WAAF since 2002. He also programmed WAQY in Springfield.

WSMN - 1590AM in Nashua, New Hampshire is planning on going back on the air.

The Nashua Telegrah has this story....

Sound like an uphill battle, but we wish them luck in this 'high calling' of local radio!

WUMB Amps Up! Well, sort of. ;-) WUMB Boston has applied for a small pattern change for it's WNEF (91.7) in Newburyport, to compensate for Philips Academy's WPAA (91.7), which is now dark/silent, as they let their license lapse.

A Late Summer arrival....???
WLLH (Lowell-Lawrence) / WAMG (Dedham) are set to slip to ESPN Sports Radio in Late summer. The press release says that "both stations have applied for an increase in power". I wonder what that means....or if it is even feasible.

I, for one, am looking forward to hearing Keith Olberman on Sports!

The River flow continues....

-

Bob Mendelsohn has left the GM chair at The River (WXRV - 92.5) in Haverhill. (H is leaving to "reflct and explore other opportunities".)

The River has had a reasonable amount of sucess with the AAA format, especially in light of it's limitations. (Signal, billing, ownership resources.)

However, The River appears to always be in a state of flux. On the face of it, it appears to have a hard time holding on to ANY staff...as PD's (and others) come and go. One has to wonder what is going on up there internally, to have such a liquid situation.

With the sucess they have had, you would think they would start to build some long term staffers.

Whow knows....

BTW...If you know anyone looking for a GM job....tell them The River is currently looking for one! ....if they dare.

Celtics to R K O !

-

You've no doubt heard that the Celtics are moving from WWZN to WRKO.

Here's the Globe's account:

Celtics head to WRKO

...and the Herald's story:

Celts-WRKO score with broadcast deal

There is lots of talk about the signal comparisons between WWZN and WRKO. However, I think the bigger problem with WWZN was that very few people even know the station exists.....never mind knowing that they carried the Celics.

The Fourth.....!

-

This year, WBZ will be carrying the Fourth of July Boston Pops Concert on the Esplanade, including the Fireworks. (Fireworks on the radio? What a spendid idea!) ;-) I'm told that coverage begins at 7PM. It's interesting that no FM's will be carrying as in the past.

I remember years ago, WBZ and WHDH were battling it out for the rights to the concert. If I recall correctly it was a year that WBZ lost the concert, and WHDH snagged it. WBZ was apparently miffed, so they aired last years concert, while WHDH ran the current concert live. I always wondered how many people didn't realize that they were not listening to the live concert from the Esplanade.

If you haven't had your fill of Live 8, locally, WBMX - Mix 98.5 will be carrying the concert live all day (audio only). The BBC is supposed to be carrying the TV/Video stream online. (AOL is also carrying it.)

Thea weather this weekend is perfect!

Have a Happy and Safe Fourth!
